Rooted in Texas wool country, gathered in the Hill Country
The story of Hill Country Wool begins long before our name did. Dawn Brown built Independence Wool & Mohair in Brenham, Texas into one of only two working wool mills in the entire state — processing small-batch, traceable yarns and rovings from Texas-grown sheep and Angora goats, with family roots in Texas ranching stretching back before statehood. Sarah Winterstrom established Winterstrom Ranch and Fibermill in Natalia, Texas, growing it into a full-service mill — scouring, carding, spinning, dyeing, and felting — while raising alpacas and educating visitors about the full journey from animal to finished fiber.
Their paths crossed in the Texas fiber community the way most good things happen in Texas: slowly, then all at once. Along the way, they met Don Thorp — weaver, spinner, and the operations mind behind what would become The Rogue Skein. Three people, two mills, three ranches, and a shared belief that Texas fiber deserved better infrastructure and louder advocates.
In October 2024, personal changes and an irresistible Victorian house on Main Street in Kerrville made the decision easy. The Rogue Skein opened, and Hill Country Wool was conceived as its dedicated milling operation — bringing all of that institutional knowledge into a single, purpose-built facility in the Texas Hill Country.
